History

Once upon a time...

Over one hundred years ago in the Northeastern portion of Baja California, there was a fertile valley, a place irrigated by the waters of the Colorado River. A city began to form in this spot, and its population quickly grew. The new community soon decided upon a name for their home in this valley, combining the words Mexico and California: Mexicali.

Mexicali is the capital of the state of Baja California. However, due to the sudden growth of the city, it was only three decades ago, city officials and historians declared March 14, 1903, as the official date of this historical moment.

To this day, Mexicali continues to be a progressive city, welcoming tourism of all kinds: for business, pleasure, hunting, adventure and even the quickly growing health tourism, the latter being sustained by the city's many modern health facilities.

Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Activity

Due to it's proximity to the United States border, the growth of Mexicali has been greatly impacted by the maquiladora and in-bond industry, trade and the increase in the export of its agricultural products, as well as its commercial development, and the strength of its agricultural production.

Due to the abundance of water provided by the Colorado River and the city's aquifer system, the Valley of Mexicali is a prominent supplier of agricultural products, including exotic vegetables, cotton and wheat.

As far as the commercial activity in the city goes, there is plenty of room for further growth. The modern shopping centers located in the city offer extensive possibilities for business and production.

Also, noteworthy are the partnerships which have been formed between the maquiladoras and other industries in the area, making the city a pillar of industry for all Northeastern Mexico.

We invite you to see and enjoy Mexicali.
